Analysts say only a fraction of gamers use video playback capabilities

Saturday, June 30th, 2007

PS3, Xbox 360, and WiiResearch analysts at The Diffusion Group have released an interesting study into the habits and knowledge levels of gamers in relationship to playing back videos, DVDs, and other video content on their consoles. Only 30% of console owners surveyed knew their game boxes were capable of playing back movies or other content, and only 13% were actually using it for that purpose. Read on for more.
On one hand, as enthusiasts we’d love to tear this study to shreds, pointing out that they might not have been interviewing the right people (did they ask people using Dreamcast and Sega Genesis? or just those with 360s and PS3s?), or asking the questions in the right way (did they ask if people were only using the high-def capabilities of their consoles? did they even ask if the consoles were hooked up to HDTVs?) Trying to take a step back from the situation and look objectively makes us realize, as with HDTV display manufacturers, a lot of the fault lies in informing customers about their products. Surveys still point to consumers believing that they simply need hook up a VCR to an HDTV to make it “high def,” and this is probably no different.

So do us a favor, evangelize for HD, will ya? Tell a friend about that HD DVD add-on for his Xbox, or show a neighbor how to download some 1080 content from the PSN store. You’ll make us all smile in the process.

Denon’s LCD-packin’ RC-7000CI remote hits the FCC

Saturday, June 30th, 2007

Universal Remote’s MX-810 sure was nice, but now it’s got a bit of competition coming its way care of the forthcoming Denon RC-7000CI. This stylish RF remote comes pre-programmed to play nice with a plethora of Denon components right out of the box, and the built-in LCD screen should make setting up your non-Denon hardware a lesson in simplicity (more or less). Additionally, the device looks to support multizone control and network control when used with the optional RC-7000RCI node. As you’d expect, the FCC isn’t dropping any hints as to how much this beauty will cost nor when we can hope to see it land, but it’s practically a foregone conclusion that the brand name alone here will demand a pretty penny. Check out a few more glances after the jump.

Resolute Wal-Mart shopper attempts to self-checkout $5 plasma

Saturday, June 30th, 2007

While we’ve certainly seen more dramatic heists before, this particular run-in with the law melds cleverness and ignorance in perfect harmony. After conjuring up grandiose thoughts of subversion, a less-than-reasonable fellow managed to snag a 42-inch Sanyo plasma, replace the $984 pricetag with a slightly less burdensome $4.88 sticker, and carry it to the front where he utilized a self-checkout register to all but steal a brand new PDP. Presumably grinning from ear to ear just basking in the glory of his brilliance, we imagine the mood went south quite quickly after store officers approached the man and demanded a receipt. Of course, he attempted to sweet talk his way out of the predicament, but the end result landed him in handcuffs at the Ouachita Correctional Center. Can’t blame a guy for tryin’, eh?
