How to get geared up for Super Bowl XLII

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

Yeah, you’ve seen an awful lot of Super Bowl XLII talk ’round these parts over the past few days, but considering that it’s probably the biggest sporting spectacle in all of America, we suppose it makes sense to get everything absolutely perfect for gameday. Sound & Vision has an interesting writeup that details the dos and don’ts for throwing a shindig that will leave guests in awe, and while having the right equipment most certainly plays a part, using that DVR judiciously and ensuring that seating is setup so that all guests can view the screen satisfactorily also makes a huge difference. Hit up the read link below for the rundown — you can never be too thorough, right?

Foxtel’s HD+ hits Australia in mid-2008

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

Australians have another HD provider to look forward to, as Foxtel has announced its HD+ service, launching mid-2008. Slated to start with four full time HD channels, featuring content from BBC HD, Discovery HD, National Geographic HD, Fox Sports HD and ESPN HD, Foxtel calls it the most expansive HD offering in Australia, more than the Seven and Ten networks. Plans call for more channels after another satellite goes up in 2009, meanwhile the company is rolling the service out with a new iQ2 set-top DVR box complete with 320GB HD for recordings and On Demand content downloaded either via cable or satellite. Most importantly, customers can expect to catch the 2010 Commonwealth Games in HD, and check out a very trippy animated representation of HD’s pixels on Foxtel’s website and blog. Frankly, we’re not sure the blog is a good idea, with only 20% of customers estimated to have an HDTV, who would really read daily updates on high definition related issues?

Five new premium HD channels land on TWC in Albany, New York

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

One thing is for certain about this — those holed up in Manhattan clamoring for more HD from Time Warner Cable will only be screaming louder after hearing that the capital city has received yet another dose of high-definition before the state’s most notable city. Yep, just a month (and a few days) after Albany received a small bucketful of new HD channels, subscribers in the area are reportedly able to tune into HBO West HD, Cinemax HD, Cinemax West HD, Starz HD and Starz West HD, provided they pay extra for the Premiums, of course. As tipster Mike N. so eloquently puts it: “Not bad for Smallbany!” [Disclosure: Engadget is part of the Time Warner family]

Morel’s Fat Lady loudspeaker thins out your wallet

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

According to Morel, its Fat Lady floorstanding speaker is the result of two full years of R&D, and it’s got the looks (and price tag) to prove it. Constructed from a unique mix of carbon, fiberglass, resin and other materials, this curvaceous loudspeaker houses a pair of 9-inch woofers, a single 6-inch midrange driver and a 1.1-inch soft dome tweeter. The former two even boast cones crafted from three layers of carbon fiber woven mat, Roahcell PMI damper and non woven carbon sheet, and the sexy exterior is kept glossy by numerous layers of protective epoxy lacquer. Mum’s the word on frequency range and power handling, but considering that these are pegged at $25,000 per pair, maybe it figures only a sliver of the population needs to know, anyway.

WiFi-enabled universal remote pulls codes from the web

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

Filed under:

You probably won’t be seeing TVcompass’s SR 1500 universal remote released looking exactly like this (or even bearing the TVcompass name) but we have high hopes some other company will rebrand the WiFi-enabled unit soon. Featuring a QVGA display, and Windows CE, the SR 1500 pulls device codes from the web using the built-in browser, which supports Flash and J2ME, backup settings to a server, and do custom guide displays. There’s no pricing yet, but hopefully that’ll get sorted when this thing gets picked up for resale.
